The drills will run for two days and will be from\u00a02200 GMT \u200bto 1000 GMT each day around the\u00a0Dongshan Island, \u200cbordering \u2060the province of Guangdong.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" class=\"text-align-justify\">The timing of this move is very much all about sending a clear signal. It comes just a day after talks between US secretary of state Rubio and China foreign minister Wang Yi in Manila yesterday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" class=\"text-align-justify\">For some context, Rubio said that\u00a0the US opposes China&#8217;s deployment of coast guard vessels near Taiwan and also criticised the\u00a0recent aggressive encroachments by Chinese coast guard ships into waters near\u00a0Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\" class=\"text-align-justify\">In his words, China was &#8220;undermining the\u00a0spirit of strategic stability&#8221; while acknowledging that the deep policy differences on Taiwan will likely persist &#8220;for the foreseeable future&#8221;.
