Italy\u2019s FTSE MIB led the gains, while the UK FTSE 100 was the only major index to finish lower.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nGerman DAX: +0.19% at 26,315.92\n<\/li>\n<li>\nFrance\u2019s CAC 40: +0.27% at 8,462.39\n<\/li>\n<li>\nUK\u2019s FTSE 100: -0.07% at 10,878.11\n<\/li>\n<li>\nSpain\u2019s Ibex: +0.05% at 20,067.29\n<\/li>\n<li>\nItaly\u2019s FTSE MIB: +0.31% at 52,882.98\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the European debt market, benchmark 10-year yields moved sharply higher following the hotter inflation readings from the United States. The increases were broadly between five and six basis points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nGermany: 3.235%, +5.5 basis points\n<\/li>\n<li>\nFrance: 4.090%, +5.4 basis points\n<\/li>\n<li>\nUK: 5.037%, +4.9 basis points\n<\/li>\n<li>\nSpain: 3.690%, +3.9 basis points\n<\/li>\n<li>\nItaly: 4.058%, +5.4 basis points\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the U.S., the major indices are trading modestly lower as investors await Nvidia\u2019s earnings after the closing bell. The Nasdaq and Russell 2000 are underperforming, although the declines remain contained:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nDow Industrial Average: -102.01 points, or -0.19%, at 53,480.36\n<\/li>\n<li>\nS&amp;P 500: -6.74 points, or -0.09%, at 7,670.53\n<\/li>\n<li>\nNasdaq Composite: -95.17 points, or -0.36%, at 26,056.13\n<\/li>\n<li>\nRussell 2000: -7.22 points, or -0.24%, at 3,002.80\n<\/li>\n<li>\nNasdaq 100: -62.50 points, or -0.21%, at 29,146.72\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The U.S. dollar is higher across the board following a slightly hotter-than-expected headline PCE inflation report. The gains are led by the dollar\u2019s advances against the New Zealand dollar, Swiss franc and British pound. The greenback is only lower vs the AUD (-0.11%).\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Below are the USDs change vs the major currencies as London\/European traders head for the exits:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nEUR: 1.1650, +0.21%\n<\/li>\n<li>\nJPY: 159.35, +0.12%\n<\/li>\n<li>\nGBP: 1.3592, +0.42%\n<\/li>\n<li>\nCHF: 0.8054, +0.50%\n<\/li>\n<li>\nCAD: 1.3876, +0.29%\n<\/li>\n<li>\nAUD: 0.7167, -0.11%\n<\/li>\n<li>\nNZD: 0.5937, +0.62%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Yield are higher with the snapshot showing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 year yield 4.221%, +1.8 basis points <\/li>\n<li>5 year yield 4.381%, +3.2 basis points <\/li>\n<li>10 year yield 4.664%, +2.5 basis points. <\/li>\n<li>30 year yield 5.19%, +1.6 basis points<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The US treasury will auction off 5 year notes at 1 PM ET as it completes the 2nd leg of its coupon auctions for the week. Tomorrow the treasury will auction off 7 year notes<\/p>\n<p>The July PCE report showed core inflation rising 0.2% for the month and 3.3% from a year earlier, both matching expectations. However, headline PCE rose 0.2% versus the 0.1% estimate, while the year-over-year rate of 3.7% was above the 3.6% forecast. Personal income increased 0.4%, double the 0.2% estimate, while personal spending rose 0.2% versus 0.1% expected. Real spending was unchanged, suggesting inflation accounted for the nominal increase in consumption.<\/p>\n<p>The second estimate of second-quarter GDP was unrevised at 1.5%, matching expectations, while consumer spending was revised higher to 3.4% from 3.2%. The inflation components were less encouraging. The GDP price deflator was revised to 6.4% from 6.2%, core PCE within the GDP report rose to 3.6% versus 3.4% expected, and headline PCE prices increased to 5.3% versus the 5.1% estimate. The combination of modest growth and persistent inflation keeps the Fed in a difficult position.<\/p>\n<p>Durable goods orders rose 1.1% in July, beating the 0.5% estimate. However, the underlying details were softer. Orders excluding transportation rose just 0.4% versus 0.8% expected, while nondefense capital goods orders excluding aircraft\u2014a proxy for business investment\u2014increased only 0.2% compared with the 0.9% estimate. Orders excluding defense rose a stronger 1.3%.<\/p>\n<p>In other markets, crude oil is rebounding after three consecutive days of declines, while gold, silver and Bitcoin are all trading lower as the dollar and global yields move higher:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nWTI crude oil: $82.84, +$0.47 or +0.57%\n<\/li>\n<li>\nGold: $4,593.73, -$64.04 or -1.37%\n<\/li>\n<li>\nSilver: $67.89, -$0.82 or -1.20%\n<\/li>\n<li>\nBitcoin: $77,989, down $546 or -0.70%\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\">The focus now shifts squarely to Nvidia\u2019s earnings after the close. The results and, more importantly, the company\u2019s guidance will provide the next major test for the AI trade and could help determine the near-term direction of the Nasdaq and the broader U.S. equity market.
