Reuters is reporting that China AI startup DeepSeek has tapped CITIC Securities to kick start their IPO process, citing two people with knowledge of the matter. The tech firm is said to be preparing to begin the process this year with the IPO set for Shanghai’s tech-focused STAR Market exchange.<\/p>\n

So far, the sources say that the timing of a potential offering and the amount that DeepSeek might look to raise as well as valuation targets have all not yet been determined.<\/p>\n

Just be wary that DeepSeek is in the midst of a funding round that would value the firm at around \u00a5500 billion or roughly $75 billion since July.<\/p>\n

Before that, it raised about $7.4 billion in June with a post-money valuation of over $50 billion – according to filings from investors. In this particular funding round, DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng personally committed\u00a0\u00a520 billion with Tencent Holdings pledging\u00a0\u00a510 billion. The latter is now the largest external shareholder of the company.<\/p>\n

It is about more than raising cash<\/p>\n

Like many other AI company, DeepSeek’s\u00a0capital requirements are growing quickly in this fast-paced landscape.\u00a0The company is spending heavily on computing infrastructure, model development, talent and its own chips. And that is precisely the areas where the AI arms race is becoming increasingly expensive.<\/p>\n

As such, that makes public-market access strategically important.<\/p>\n

The big question for markets though is whether investors are willing to keep funding DeepSeek’s expansion at increasingly aggressive valuations. It is the same question being posed to almost all AI-related companies at the moment.<\/p>\n

Across the globe, investors are increasingly asking whether the massive amounts of spending on computing capacity and infrastructure will eventually generate sufficient profits.<\/p>\n

DeepSeek could become a benchmark for Chinese AI valuations<\/p>\n

If successful, this launch will\u00a0give public investors something they currently have relatively little confidence and a feel of. And that is\u00a0a direct valuation benchmark for one of China\u2019s leading frontier AI developers.<\/p>\n

Just last week,\u00a0Tencent-backed chipmaker Enflame attracted online IPO demand exceeding 6,000 times the shares available. And that highlights the enormous scale of investor appetite surrounding China’s AI ecosystem.<\/p>\n

DeepSeek could therefore become the next, and potentially much larger, reference point.<\/p>\n

A potential catalyst for the broader tech trade in China<\/p>\n

For Chinese equities, this IPO – when it lands – could reinforce the argument that the country\u2019s AI industry is evolving from a private venture capital story into a major public market theme.<\/p>\n

In turn, it may also encourage more Chinese AI companies to go public.<\/p>\n

That is one potential upshot and trigger that could set the market ablaze. But at the same time, there is also a big risk tied to such a canon event.<\/p>\n

If multiple highly-valued AI companies hit the market simultaneously, investors could become more selective with their money choices. That means capital may increasingly flow toward companies able to demonstrate genuine commercialisation rather than simply technological promises.<\/p>\n

So, there’s that to consider.<\/p>\n

The valuation will be the real market test<\/p>\n

Come what may,\u00a0DeepSeek\u2019s eventual IPO valuation arguably be more important than the listing itself.<\/p>\n

At $75 billion, it is a valuation that\u00a0would already represent an enormous premium compared with many Chinese technology companies. As such, there will be much more scrutiny on the company as investors will demand for plenty of clarity on things like\u00a0revenue growth, margins, computing costs and how quickly DeepSeek can monetise its technology.<\/p>\n

China has quite some ways in catching up to the AI footprints laid out by Wall Street when it comes to the stock market. But in identifying investor needs and wants, the world moves at the same pace. And now, investors are chasing companies that\u00a0are capable of proving that spending can generate sustainable returns. Those are the companies that will be increasingly rewarded in this landscape shift over the past year.<\/p>\n

As such,\u00a0DeepSeek\u2019s IPO could become one of the clearest tests of that transition in China.<\/p>\n

But whether or not it goes boom or bust, at least this eventual listing will give markets something we didn’t really have before. And that is\u00a0a public price tag on one of China\u2019s most closely watched AI challengers.<\/p>\n
