There were a few specific things:

That it hit a wall

That it was too expensive

That it was commoditized

That various labs were going to outright win

What the market will need to contemplate next is the question: What if it’s too powerful?

On Tuesday, Jacob Coxon, a researcher at Anthropic, said he resigned after three years of model pre-training at OpenAI and Anthropic. “Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives,” he wrote.

He followed that up with a warning:

“Do not underestimate the power of this technology. These will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources. We have all witnessed the progress in each of these domains, and progress is not slowing.”

The calls for regulation are growing and they will continue to grow after Reuters reported today that the May-June escape of rogue OpenAI agents used at least 10 additional undisclosed sites to communicate with one estimate at +23.

The hacking is just the start of the fears, Coxon said:

“The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.”

A fellow Anthropic employee in safety said shortly afterwards there was a greater than 10% chance AI could “kill all humans” in the next decade.

Needless to say that “kill all humans” is bad for the stock market but the solution is a problem too. He said the global race needs to slow but that “may require costly actions such as a temporary ban on improving model capabilities.”

The problem with that line of thinking is that it just won’t work in today’s climate. Silicon Valley has internalized the idea of ‘move fast and break things’ while the US and China feel they’re locked in a technological war.

Even if there is a temporary ban, development will continue behind the scenes and there will be endless temptation to exploit it. The possibility of global co-operation is also almost nil given the global view of the White House.

Changing gears, let’s assume we don’t get the wipeout of humanity or some other kind of internet devestation from AI. I want to focus on what he said about ‘progress not slowing’. There is an increasing risk of the commoditization of the value layer, in my view. Once a model is powerful enough to do your taxes accurately, it doesn’t need super-intelligence to create more value. Sure, there may be some offshore trust strategy that can be unveiled but for 99% of tax filers, it’s just a replacement for H&R Block or their CPA.

That thinking goes down the line for me and I continue to strongly believe that the best AI trade is in the real economy, HALO stocks that have low margins but can improve them with AI.

Meanwhile, the market has been conditioned to think that the value capture from technology will be with tech companies. That wasn’t the case with a technology like electricity or even the transistor. AI will be like that.

This article was written by Adam Button at investinglive.com.

The market has gone through various phases where stock markets sold off on fears surrounding AI.
