It spiked higher across the board during the European morning, but has given back much of that move. The greenback is still higher against the GBP, CAD and AUD, lower against the JPY, CHF and NZD, and little changed against the EUR.

Oil is the main story. Saudi Arabia has restarted its East–West pipeline, which carries crude to the Red Sea port of Yanbu. Exports from Yanbu could resume later Tuesday, although the pipeline is initially operating at a reduced rate. The restart has eased some immediate supply concerns and helped push crude lower.

There is also talk of renewed U.S.–Iran diplomacy during the UN General Assembly. Reuters cited a senior Iranian official saying the Strait of Hormuz could reopen within seven days if the U.S. eased military pressure and lifted its blockade of Iranian ports. The supplied news feed subsequently showed Iranian sources disputing that timetable. For now, traders have a pipeline restart to assess, while the diplomatic outlook remains uncertain.

Stocks point higher

U.S. stock futures are showing modest gains for the major indices:

Dow futures: +203.12 points

S&P 500 futures: +10 points

Nasdaq 100 futures: +27.5 points

European stocks are also mostly higher in the supplied snapshot:

Germany’s DAX: 25,704.40, up 0.51%

France’s CAC 40: 8,176.74, up 0.46%

UK’s FTSE 100: 10,751.33, up 0.11%

Spain’s IBEX 35: 19,879.99, up 0.79%

Italy’s FTSE MIB: 52,236.79, down 0.26%

Oil lower; metals mixed

In the supplied snapshots, Brent crude was at $98.68, down 1.65%, while WTI was at $93.60, down 2.28%. The focus now shifts to whether Saudi Arabia can increase pipeline flows and restore Yanbu shipments as expected. The restart helps supply, but traders will want to see the barrels moving.

Gold was at $4,319.87, down 0.52%, and silver at $65.49, down 0.74%. Copper was at $6.8410, up 1.16%, while Bitcoin was at $86,043, down 0.63%.

U.S. Treasury yields were lower in the earlier snapshot, with the 2-year at 4.732%, 5-year at 4.8037%, 10-year at 4.9306% and 30-year at 5.2644%. Lower oil and yields may help sentiment, but the moves across currencies and commodities are mixed. That makes it important to let the price action in each market define the bias.

Diplomacy and today’s calendar

The UN General Assembly puts geopolitical headlines in focus this week. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are expected to meet, with attacks on energy infrastructure among the issues on the table. The anticipated Trump–Xi meeting in Washington later this week will put trade and Taiwan in focus as well. A headline may move a market quickly; an actual agreement would carry more weight.

The supplied calendar shows the following events, with times in ET:

8:15 a.m.: ADP weekly employment change; prior 16.3K.

9:55 a.m.: President Trump speaks.

10:00 a.m.: Eurozone consumer confidence; forecast −16, prior −16. Richmond manufacturing index; forecast 2, prior 4.

10:05 a.m.: John Williams, president of the New York Fed, speaks.

10:20 a.m.: Philip Jefferson, vice chair of the Fed, speaks.

1:00 p.m.: Tom Barkin, president of the Richmond Fed, speaks.

The Fed speakers will be worth listening to after last week’s rate decision. Watch whether their comments move Treasury yields and whether the dollar follows.

In the Kickstart video, I take a look at the three major currency pairs—EURUSD, USDJPY and GBPUSD—from a technical perspective. For each pair, I outline the bias, the risk-defining levels and the targets that would give either the buyers or sellers more contro

This article was written by Greg Michalowski at investinglive.com.

The U.S. dollar is mixed as North American traders arrive.
