She sees little evidence that inflation is heading back toward 2%, while a stable labor market and resilient economy give the Fed room to keep the pressure on. Her wording leaves another hike on the table; it does not say the next move is decided. For traders, the question is whether incoming inflation data begin to show the progress she says is missing.

Other Fed officials have delivered a similar message. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said earlier today that growth is solid and the labor market remains close to maximum employment, while inflation is still elevated and risks are tilted to the upside. She warned that the longer high inflation persists, the harder and more costly it may be to bring down. Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin said inflation risks outweigh employment risks and left open the possibility of additional hikes. Fed Governor Michael Barr said further policy adjustments are likely needed in his base case. For traders, Paulson’s comments add to a growing argument for another hike, though the officials have not committed to one.

In addition to the above, over the last few days the number of more hawkish Fed officials include:

Williams

Barr

Musalem

Collins

Paulson

Hammack

Schmid

This could irk the President and in turn, add pressure to the new Fed Chair Warsh who has been hawkish, but still needs to speak regularly to the President who has a different agenda – especially going into the November election.

The next Fed meeting is at the end of October (October 28).
