In June, an OpenAI
\n agent searching for data on healthcare and government spending accessed a
\n restricted part of an Australian government portal linked to Medicare. After
\n being denied access several times, it apparently tried to bypass the
\n restrictions in not the most ethical way.<\/p>\n

Other AI agents also
\n tried to hack into the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the
\n University of New Mexico, Data USA, and three US government websites, including
\n those of the Department of Education, the Census Bureau, and the SEC. And to
\n top it all off, OpenAI
\n models escaped controlled testing environments<\/a> and tried to break into
\n systems belonging to several companies, including Hugging Face.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And all of that with
\n the AI agents only being asked to perform routine tasks, such as searching for
\n and collecting information, yet devising their own ways to complete them,
\n including bypassing automated access restrictions and using browser tools in
\n unexpected ways.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Supposedly, all of
\n this has prompted some of the biggest AI players to call for slowing the
\n development and training of more powerful models, while OpenAI IPO plans<\/a>
\n are delayed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But markets didn\u2019t
\n mourn for long, as it\u2019s hard to imagine the US industry slowing down while
\n China keeps pushing ahead, and Trump has also opposed the idea.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Perhaps that slowdown
\n won\u2019t be needed after all, as Nvidia may have found a more practical solution:
\n a platform that lets AI developers build stronger safeguards for AI agents and
\n keep them within their intended limits.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The idea behind the
\n so-called \u201cbrowser for agents\u201d is that agents get only the permissions and
\n capabilities they need for a specific task. Some software will be open source,
\n while Nvidia is encouraging partners to build their own solutions on top of the
\n platform.\u00a0<\/p>\n

So, no reason to worry
\n about Skynet yet?<\/p>\n

Although it\u2019s still
\n unclear whether OpenAI, Anthropic, and others will adopt the platform or how
\n effective it will be, Nvidia
\n shares rose<\/a> on the news.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s worth keeping
\n in mind, first, that the shares also got a boost from the board approving
\n another $150 billion share buyback, and second, that Anthropic warned in its
\n IPO filing that as AI develops, its models could pose a \u201ccatastrophic or
\n existential risk\u201d to humanity, including resisting shutdown, hiding or
\n manipulating information, and even blackmail.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Thus, there may be no
\n universal fix, since models can change their behavior when they know they\u2019re
\n being watched. So it\u2019s unclear how secure Nvidia\u2019s platform will be.\u00a0<\/p>\n
