A higher opening gives buyers an opportunity. Whether they can build on that move depends on their ability to get above—and stay above—the next key technical levels.

In the video above, I take a look at the S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq 100 from a technical perspective. Each offers a slightly different view of the equity market, and understanding those differences can help traders judge where the strength—or weakness—is coming from.

The S&P 500 tracks 500 leading U.S. companies across a wide range of industries, including technology, financials, healthcare, industrials and consumer businesses. It provides a broad measure of large-company performance. However, because larger companies carry more weight, the biggest technology names can still have a substantial influence on its direction.

The Nasdaq Composite includes thousands of stocks listed on the Nasdaq exchange. It has a heavy concentration in technology, along with companies in areas such as biotechnology, consumer services and other industries. It offers a wider view of Nasdaq-listed stocks, including both large companies and smaller businesses.

The Nasdaq 100 focuses on 100 of the largest nonfinancial companies listed on Nasdaq. It is more concentrated than the Composite and heavily influenced by large technology and growth companies. It is not limited to technology stocks, but it gives traders a closer look at the major companies that often drive that part of the market.

Watching all three together helps put the price action into perspective. If the Nasdaq 100 leads the gains, large technology and growth companies may be doing much of the heavy lifting. If the S&P 500 also shows strength, participation may be extending across more industries. The comparison gives traders clues, although the underlying stocks and sectors help confirm how broad that participation really is.

For traders, the next step is to connect that market backdrop with the technicals. Where is support? Where is resistance? Are buyers extending above a key moving average or swing area, or is the rally running into sellers?

Those levels help define the bias and the risk. A break above resistance that holds gives buyers more control. A move above that quickly fails tells a different story: buyers had their shot, but could not keep the momentum going.

In the video, I walk through the key technical levels for each index and explain what buyers need to do to build on the gains—and where sellers could regain control. As prices change through the session, those levels provide a framework for judging the next move

This article was written by Greg Michalowski at investinglive.com.

The broader U.S. stock indices are opening in positive territory, but the early gains have yet to turn into a convincing run to the upside.
