That did not seem too long ago but I think we can safely say that those days are looking rather distant now.

Judging by how bond yields have continued to surge to fresh highs in decades, it seems that one thing is rather clear. If you want investors to part with their money, then you’re simply just going to have to pay up. And that is probably not something that governments want to hear right now.

But at the same time, I reckon we’re all getting a rather uncomfortable reminder that money actually has a price. Now, what exactly does that mean?

Well, just imagine you want to borrow $100,000 to start a business. If the interest rate is at 2%, you’re paying $2,000 annually in interest. But if it is at 6%, that suddenly becomes $6,000 in interest payment. Your business hasn’t changed and neither have your ambitions. Yet, you’re already $4,000 worse off every year.

Now, just imagine that same thing happening across the entire economy.

You have governments borrowing heavily to finance everything from infrastructure to defence spending. Then, you have companies pouring billions into AI development and data centres. And you also have households still needing to pay mortgages and loans to finance their everyday lives.

The problem with that? Everyone is essentially competing for the same capital and lenders aren’t necessarily willing to part with their money as cheaply as before.

Of course, borrowing demand is not the sole reason as to why yields are rising. You’ve also got persistent inflation concerns and worries over ballooning government debt. And neither of which is exactly helping to convince investors to accept lower returns.

And that is where things get a little bit trickier for markets in general.

Think about it. If you can earn roughly 5% from a US government bond, why would you rush to buy an expensive stock unless you really believed it could deliver considerably better returns?

A few years ago, you still probably would and I wouldn’t blame you for that. But today, you’d probably have to think twice about it at the very least.

In understanding that shift in investor thinking, it makes life much more difficult for companies trading at lofty valuations – especially those promising big profits many years down the road. Meanwhile, you also have businesses carrying heavy debt loads that could find themselves spending more on interest payments instead of growing their operations.

Having said that, it’s not all bad news. Savers and bond investors can benefit from higher yields too, even if inflation and market risks are still dominating the landscape.

At the end of the day, it’s just a case of investors needing to adapt as the rules of the game has changed. The era of cheap money coming to an end doesn’t necessarily mean the end of rising markets. It just means that investors may have to become much more selective about what they’re willing to pay for.

This article was written by Justin Low at investinglive.com.

Ah, remember the days when borrowing money was almost ridiculously cheap?
