That being how the recent surge in Treasury yields is impacting the banking sector and, by extension, the broader US economy.

Now, higher interest rates and yields aren’t necessarily a bad thing for banks to begin with. They can charge more interest on loans and that potentially means fatter margins to work with in trying to earn more money. However, there’s also the other side of the equation to be mindful about.

Higher borrowing costs are also likely to weigh more on demand conditions, in particular demand for loans. Just think about businesses deciding to hold back on expansion plans or households putting off from taking up a new mortgage because financing has become too expensive.

As such, that will be one of the key things to watch in the earnings reports this week.

Besides that, banks will also have to face higher funding costs as they may need to offer better deposit rates to keep customers from moving their money elsewhere. So even if lending income improves, that doesn’t automatically translate to better profit margins.

And then there’s also the question of credit quality. If borrowers struggle to keep up with repayments, banks could start seeing more missed payments and potentially higher loan losses. Any clues pointing in this direction would offer another indication to markets that tighter financial conditions are starting to take a toll on businesses and/or households.

Now of course, none of this means that we’re starting to see major problems emerge in the banking sector. However, they do offer markets a useful gauge on whether the impact of higher yields is starting to filter through to the real economy.

So, don’t just pay attention to how much money the banks are making this week. It’ll be worth paying just as much attention to signs on whether their customers are starting to feel the pinch.

This article was written by Justin Low at investinglive.com.

It’s earnings season again and as is always the case, the big banks on Wall Street will be the ones to kick start proceedings starting tomorrow.
