A capex increase would be read as a vote of confidence in AI demand into 2027 and would support chip equipment names such as ASML. TSMC’s results also act as a read-through for Nvidia and the wider AI hardware trade, so a cautious tone on margins or orders could weigh across Asian and US tech. With the stock up strongly this year, the bar for a positive surprise is high.

—

Earlier:

ASML says 2027 and 2028 supply will fall short of demand as Q3 sales hit a record

—

TSMC’s record profit is close to a foregone conclusion, so the real test on Thursday is what it says about next quarter and how much more it plans to spend.

Summary:

TSMC is expected to report a 65% rise in Q3 net profit to NT$746.3 billion (about US$23.4 billion), according to an LSEG SmartEstimate from 16 analysts

Anything above NT$706.56 billion would be a record and its 11th straight quarter of profit growth

Q3 revenue has already been reported at a record of roughly NT$1.49 trillion, up about 50% year on year

The earnings call is at 0600 GMT (2:00am in New York), with Q4 guidance and an updated full-year outlook expected

In July, TSMC raised its 2026 capex forecast to US$60 billion to US$64 billion

TSMC is investing US$265 billion in Arizona and is reported to be evaluating a Texas investment

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) is expected to post a sixth consecutive quarter of record profit on Thursday, as heavy spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure keeps demand for its most advanced chips running high.

Net profit for the third quarter is forecast to rise 65% to NT$746.3 billion, about US$23.4 billion, according to an LSEG SmartEstimate drawn from 16 analysts, as reported by Reuters. SmartEstimates give more weight to forecasters with stronger track records. Any figure above NT$706.56 billion would be the company’s highest quarterly net income on record and its 11th straight quarter of profit growth.

TSMC will hold its earnings call at 0600 GMT, which is 2:00pm in Taiwan, and 2:00am in New York. It is expected to give guidance for the fourth quarter and update its full-year outlook on the call.

Revenue will not be the surprise. TSMC reported last week that third-quarter revenue rose about 50% from a year earlier to a record of roughly NT$1.49 trillion, ahead of market forecasts. The focus instead falls on profit margins, fourth-quarter guidance and capital spending. In July, the company lifted its 2026 capex forecast to between US$60 billion and US$64 billion, from a previous range whose top end was US$52 billion to US$56 billion.

Analysts say demand remains strong both for TSMC’s AI chipmaking capacity and for CoWoS, its advanced chip packaging technology, which combines several chips into a single package. The world’s largest maker of advanced AI chips counts Nvidia and Apple among its key customers. Its market value of around US$2 trillion makes it Asia’s most valuable company, almost double that of South Korea’s Samsung Electronics.

The company is also expanding abroad. It is investing US$265 billion in chip plants in Arizona, including an extra US$100 billion announced in July. Reuters reported in September that TSMC was considering an investment in Texas. Tesla chief executive Elon Musk said last week that his companies would build and run a Terafab AI chip complex, part of which TSMC could potentially sublease.

Any comment on equipment supply will be closely watched. ASML, a key supplier of chipmaking equipment to TSMC and its rivals, warned on Wednesday that its planned capacity for 2027 and 2028 will not fully meet customer demand.

TSMC’s Taipei-listed shares are up 63% so far this year, broadly in line with a 69% gain for Taiwan’s benchmark index.

This article was written by Eamonn Sheridan at investinglive.com.

With record revenue already reported, the profit beat is largely expected, so the shares are more likely to react to fourth-quarter guidance and any change to the US$60 billion to US$64 billion…

[86

post-440109","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-market-news
["GET
