What next from a technical perspective?

In yesterday’s video, I looked at three major US stock indices. Each offered a different view of the market—and a different technical story:

S&P 500: The broadest sector representation of the three.

Nasdaq Composite: A broader collection of Nasdaq-listed companies, with a heavy technology weighting.

Nasdaq 100: A more concentrated index of 100 of the largest nonfinancial companies listed on Nasdaq, with significant technology exposure.

At the time, the S&P was trying to hold support at its 100-hour moving average. The Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq 100 were trading between their 100- and 200-hour moving averages, giving sellers a modest short-term advantage.

By the close, that advantage had grown. Both Nasdaq indices finished below their 200-hour moving averages. Today, the selling has continued, bringing the next technical levels into play.

Where do the buyers need to make a stand?

S&P 500 — 200-hour moving average at 7,706.38: The index has now broken below that level. Stay below, and the sellers retain control of the short-term bias. Buyers need to reclaim the moving average and hold above it to begin repairing the technical damage. The

Nasdaq Composite — 100-day moving average at 26,289: The index gapped below its rising trendline and the 38.2% retracement at 26,463, but found support buyers just ahead of its rising 100-day moving average. That gives buyers a level to lean against and some hope. Hold above it, and a recovery toward 26,463 becomes the next test. Break below it and stay below, and another layer of support gives way.

Nasdaq 100 — 100-day moving average at 29,626.09: The index has already broken below this longer-term barometer and remains below it. Buyers need to reclaim that moving average and then the broken trendline near 29,700. Until those levels are recovered and held, sellers remain in control.

The trading lesson: Finding support is only the first step

The Nasdaq Composite attracted buyers near its 100-day moving average. That is a starting point, but it does not confirm that the decline is over. Buyers still need to push the price back above broken technical levels to show they are taking back control.

The same principle applies to the S&P and Nasdaq 100. Once support breaks, that level becomes a potential ceiling on a rebound. A recovery that stalls against former support gives sellers another opportunity to lean against a defined level.

Buyers need to hold support, reclaim broken levels, and keep the recovery going. Until then, the pressure remains to the downside.

In the video above, I walk through those technical levels in more detail and outline the next downside targets if the selling continues.

This article was written by Greg Michalowski at investinglive.com.

In yesterday’s video, I looked at three major US stock indices.
