Reports of progress toward inspections of Iranian nuclear facilities encouraged selling, but conflicting reports and denials helped reverse that move.

The headlines keep changing. The uncertainty remains.

Negotiations continue, but an agreement remains elusive

The overnight headlines offered another reminder of why traders need to remain flexible. Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi said indirect negotiations are continuing through intermediary countries, including Pakistan and Qatar. He also outlined a proposal that includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz if the US fulfills its commitments. Those are Iran’s stated terms, however, rather than confirmation of an agreed reopening.

Meanwhile, Iran’s president said dialogue cannot take place alongside a blockade and threats. A separate report carried by Al Hadath said Iran rejected American demands conveyed through Pakistan. President Trump offered a more optimistic assessment, saying the US is doing “very well” with Iran, while indicating that a final decision remains on how he wants to win the war.

The Saudi-Houthi fighting adds another supply-risk concern. Progress between Washington and Tehran would be significant, but traders also need to watch whether that separate conflict eases.

For the market, the problem is straightforward: a headline can change expectations quickly, and the next headline can reverse them just as fast.

The $97–$98.48 swing area is the immediate battleground

Today’s price action has been a smaller version of yesterday’s volatility, with a high near $100.40 and a low at $96.92.

That low briefly broke below the $97 lower boundary of an important swing area before buyers pushed the price back above it. With crude trading near $97.20 at the time of writing, the price is back inside the $97.00–$98.48 swing area, but remains near its lower end.

The sellers had their shot below $97. They could not sustain the break. That gives buyers something to lean against, but there is still work to do before they can claim more control.

The first hurdle is the 100-hour moving average at $97.65, which sits inside the swing area. Buyers need to get above—and stay above—that moving average to improve the short-term picture.

Above that, $98.48 becomes the next test. Clearing that upper boundary would open the door for a move back toward the recent highs stretching from $99.27 to $101.40, including today’s high at $100.40.

The steps matter: reclaim the moving average, clear the swing area, and then look for follow-through toward the highs.

Below $97, the 200-hour moving average comes into focus

Conversely, a sustained move below $97.00 would weaken the rebound and put the rising 200-hour moving average at $95.31 back in focus.

The price has held above that moving average since October 12, with yesterday’s decline providing a test that attracted buyers. That makes it an important reference for the broader hourly trend.

A break below it—and an inability to recover—would give sellers more control and leave the market vulnerable to a deeper correction.

Further down, the 38.2% retracement of the July 2–September 15 advance comes in at $91.60. The 50% midpoint at $86.93, near where the October 6 bottom formed, provides another longer-term reference.

Those are deeper downside levels. The immediate decisions remain around $97.00 and the two hourly moving averages.

The trading lesson: follow the levels and demand follow-through

This remains a trading market. A move toward one technical level can stall, reverse, and send the price back toward the previous level. Traders need to respect that two-way risk.

That is why simply breaking a level is only part of the story. Can the price stay beyond it? Does the next target get reached? Does a pullback hold the level that was just broken?

Those are the clues that help distinguish a headline-driven spike from a move that is building momentum.

For now, the technical roadmap provides structure while the fundamental story keeps shifting. What we want to see is a clearer fundamental direction supported by the price action. Until then, take it one level at a time and be ready for the next shove.

In the video, I walk through the crude oil technical ladder and the levels buyers and sellers need to break to take more control.

This article was written by Greg Michalowski at investinglive.com.

Crude oil futures have been on a roller coaster, with competing headlines sending traders scrambling in both directions.
