The Fed still watches the inflation numbers though.

The University of Michigan’s Surveys of Consumers produces one of the oldest and most widely followed gauges of US household sentiment. Results come out twice a month, both at 10 am ET: a preliminary reading around mid-month and a final reading near the end of the month that incorporates the full sample. Revisions between the two are usually modest, but they occasionally shift the picture, particularly on inflation expectations.

The headline Index of Consumer Sentiment is built from questions about personal finances, business conditions and buying conditions for big-ticket items. It’s indexed to 100 in early 1966. The survey splits into two sub-indexes, current economic conditions and consumer expectations, with the expectations measure feeding into the Conference Board’s Leading Economic Index.

The inflation expectations figures are often the most market-relevant part of the report. Respondents estimate price changes over the next year and over the next five to 10 years. The Federal Reserve watches the longer-run measure closely as a gauge of whether inflation expectations are becoming unanchored, and a jump in either can move Treasury yields and rate pricing.

The survey moved from telephone interviews to an online format in 2024, which has made comparisons with older data trickier. Readings have also become increasingly split along partisan lines, with sentiment swinging depending on which party holds the White House. Both factors have led some economists to discount the survey’s signal.

Sentiment data don’t always line up with actual spending, and consumers who say they’re gloomy often keep spending. Still, the report offers a timely read on how households are processing inflation, tariffs, the job market and stock prices. The Conference Board’s consumer confidence index, released later in the month, tends to place more weight on labor market conditions.

This article was written by Adam Button at investinglive.com.

Prior was 46.3 Prelim was 48.1 Current conditions 46.7 vs 50.9 prior Expectations 48.4 vs 46.3 prior 1-year inflation 4.7% vs 4.7% prior 5 -year inflation 3.5% vs 3.5% prior This indicator…

[86

post-440742","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-market-news
["GET
