For the week:

Dow industrial average: +0.41%.

S&P 500: −0.47%.

Nasdaq Composite: −0.71%.

Nasdaq 100: −0.79%.

Today, the S&P 500 and both Nasdaq indices are bouncing back, with gains near 0.70%. That is an encouraging start for buyers. From a technical perspective, however, the next question is whether they can turn a bounce from support into a more sustained recovery.

Last week’s declines brought the indices toward identifiable support levels, and buyers responded. Now those buyers need to show that they can take back resistance above.

Holding support is the first step. Breaking resistance is the next.

S&P 500: Buyers defended support. Now the hourly moving averages come into focus.

The S&P 500 found buyers near the upper end of a swing area between 7,573 and 7,617, while also holding just above its rising 100-day moving average at 7,604.

That combination gave buyers a reason to lean against support. The swing area identifies a zone where price has reacted previously, while the 100-day moving average provides another reference within that same zone.

When multiple technical tools point toward the same area, traders have a clearer place to judge the strength of buyers and sellers. Holding that area keeps the recovery opportunity alive. A sustained break below would weaken that argument.

For now, support held. The next upside hurdles are:

7,716.98: The 200-hour moving average.

7,741.75: The 100-hour moving average.

Those moving averages are the next tests of whether buyers can gain greater control of the shorter-term trend.

A move above the 200-hour moving average would be a positive step. Getting above the 100-hour moving average as well—and staying above both—would strengthen the bullish bias further.

Conversely, if the recovery stalls against those levels, sellers would have a place to lean and attempt to push the price back toward support.

The S&P buyers defended an important area below. They now need to prove themselves above.

Nasdaq Composite: The broken 100-day moving average remains the key hurdle

The Nasdaq Composite’s technical position is more vulnerable after last week’s decline took the index below its 100-day moving average at 26,246.89.

The good news for buyers is that the selling stalled ahead of the September low at 25,831.74. Sellers had an opportunity to extend the decline toward that low but could not get there.

Today’s rebound has reached 26,164.45. That brings the index closer to its 100-day moving average, but buyers still have work to do.

The key levels are:

26,246.89: The 100-day moving average and the next upside hurdle.

26,164.45: Today’s high so far.

25,831.74: The September low and key downside support.

25,006: The 200-day moving average below.

A moving average that previously offered support can become resistance after the price breaks below it. That is why the reaction around 26,246.89 matters.

If buyers can reclaim that level and hold above it, the recovery gains credibility. If sellers defend it, the rebound could stall with the index still below an important daily trend indicator.

On the downside, a break below 25,831.74 would weaken the support structure and open the door toward the 200-day moving average at 25,006.

Nasdaq 100: The support floor held, but resistance remains overhead

The Nasdaq 100 found buyers during Friday’s trading near a support floor between 28,822 and 28,953.

Today, the index has rebounded to 29,213.76, putting some distance between the price and that floor. However, the recovery remains well below the broken 100-day moving average at 29,557.95.

That is the hurdle buyers need to clear to improve the technical picture.

Until then, sellers remain in play. They can point to the price trading below its 100-day moving average, even as buyers point to the successful defense of support.

The key levels are:

29,557.95: The 100-day moving average and key upside resistance.

29,213.76: Today’s high so far.

28,822–28,953: The support floor, with 28,822.67 the specific downside break level to watch.

28,108: The 38.2% retracement of the advance from the April low.

27,854: The 200-day moving average.

A sustained break below 28,822.67 would put the 38.2% retracement at 28,108 into focus, followed by the 200-day moving average at 27,854.

The 38.2% retracement measures how much of the advance from the April low has been given back. It provides another reference for judging the depth of the correction and whether buyers can establish support.

Those lower targets remain conditional. Sellers first need to break the floor that held on Friday.

A bounce is underway. Can buyers take the next step?

The encouraging development is that buyers showed up near support across all three indices. That gives traders defined levels against which to judge the recovery.

But the upside tests remain:

S&P 500: Reclaim the 200-hour and 100-hour moving averages.

Nasdaq Composite: Get back above—and stay above—the 100-day moving average.

Nasdaq 100: Reclaim its 100-day moving average while continuing to hold the support floor below.

For now, buyers are making a play. The next test is whether they can push through resistance and force sellers to give up more control.

In the video above, I take a look at the S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite, and Nasdaq 100, outlining where support held, the resistance levels buyers need to break, and the downside targets that come into play if the recovery fails.

This article was written by Greg Michalowski at investinglive.com.

U.S. stocks are moving higher today after a mixed performance last week that saw technology shares take the brunt of the selling.
