A lot of that comes down to push to diversify away from China in recent times but Beijing’s own ambitions to become more self-sufficient haven’t exactly helped matters either.

That has slowly exerted a toll on Europe’s largest economy, especially when you consider how much Germany’s industrial sector has relied on Chinese demand over the years.

And a new report from Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI) today is offering another warning of the challenges to come, with the report projecting that Germany is set to post a record trade deficit of nearly €146 billion with Asia-Pacific in 2026.

The detailed projection shows that exports to the region are expected to decline by 3.2% to €185.3 billion. Meanwhile, imports are forecast to rise by 6.4% to €330.9 billion. But perhaps the most telling detail is that excluding China, Germany’s trade deficit with Asia-Pacific would narrow to just under €35 billion. Yowza.

Just by that alone, you can see where the biggest problem lies for Germany.

For years, German manufacturers have enjoyed a strong position in China – especially when it came to automobiles and machinery. However, those days look to be over as Chinese manufacturers have stepped up to close the gap, and in some areas, even move ahead of their German counterparts.

There’s no better example to that than the auto industry. German carmakers were once among the biggest beneficiaries of China’s growing middle class but now, domestic brands are now taking a much bigger slice of the market especially as the growing majority are leaning towards electric vehicles.

According to the report, German auto exports to China fell by more than 30% in the first seven months of 2026. That’s quite the drop. Meanwhile, machinery exports declined by 18% over the same period.

That is clear evidence of the reality that China is becoming less dependent on German industrial products. And if that isn’t bad enough for Germany, the issue now is that they are still heavily reliant on Chinese imports for electronics, machinery and other industrial components.

And with EU-US trade tensions adding another layer of uncertainty, that’s hardly an encouraging backdrop for Germany’s export-driven economy.

The only small bright spot is that the likes of India and Southeast Asia are becoming more important trading partners. However, trying to replace the scale of their dealings with China isn’t something that can happen overnight.

I would argue that the bigger issue for Germany now is not just that they are facing another difficult year for exports. It is more so the fact that the competitive landscape has changed considerably over the years and they are being left behind. Europe’s largest economy has to face the reality that the traditional industrial strengths it has relied on for so long may no longer provide the same advantages they once did.

And that is a tough pill to swallow, and an even tougher one to think about how they can fix that growing problem.

This article was written by Justin Low at investinglive.com.

For quite some time now, Germany’s export struggles are hardly anything new.
