Can they clear the next upside hurdles?

The USDCAD is pushing higher in the North American session, after sellers stalled the fall near a key downside target over the last three or so trading days. That support gave buyers a level to lean against. The challenge now is to get above—and stay above—the technical levels standing in the way of a larger recovery.

Support holds. Buyers get their opportunity.

Looking at the hourly chart, the swing area between 1.3948 and 1.3963 has been an important barometer going back to August. The numbered red circles on the chart above highlight the repeated reactions around that area. Adding to its importance is the 61.8% retracement of the move up from the August low to the October high at 1.39497.

The sellers had their shot at getting below that support. They could not sustain a break. That has opened the door for buyers to push back higher in trading today.

However, holding support is only the first step. Buyers now need to show they can take back some of the technical levels broken during the sharp decline from the October high near 1.42984.

The 200 hour MA is the next key hurdle.

The rebound has taken the price back above the 100 hour MA (blue line) at 1.39809. That gives buyers a nearby risk-defining level as they try to extend the recovery. Staying above, and the buyers can explore further.

The next key hurdle is the falling 200 hour MA at 1.40012. Just above that sits the 50% midpoint of the August-to-October rally at 1.40162.

Those levels represent the next tests for buyers. Get above the 200 hour MA, and then the midpoint, and the recovery would gain more technical credibility. Stall below them, and sellers would have an opportunity to lean against resistance and push back toward support. The buyers and the sellers have the choice and can define and limit risk creating a battlezone for traders.

What are the next upside targets?

A break above 1.40162 would have traders looking toward the 100 day MA at 1.40454.

Above that, the next target is the swing area and the broken 38.2% retracementbetween 1.4068 and 1.40828. That creates another resistance zone where buyers would need to prove their strength.

The recovery needs to develop one step at a time. Holding support has kept buyers in the game. Clearing those upside hurdles would give them more control.

What would weaken the rebound?

A move back below the 100 hour MA at 1.39809 would take some of the momentum out of the recovery and bring the 1.3948–1.3963 support area back into focus.

If sellers can get below that area—and stay below it—the failed downside attempts would give way to a more meaningful break. The next major downside target would be the 200 day MA at 1.38899.

For now, the buyers have an opportunity. The 200 hour MA is the next barometer for whether they can build on it.

Education: Holding support creates an opportunity. Breaking resistance builds control.

A market can stop falling without immediately turning bullish. That is why it helps to separate the support that defines risk from the resistance levels that confirm progress.

For the USDCAD, the swing area and 61.8% retracement helped stall the decline. The move above the 100 hour MA is an initial positive step. Getting above the 200 hour MA and the 50% midpoint would strengthen the buyers’ case.

The levels provide the roadmap. Buyers can lean against support, measure progress at resistance, and recognize when a failed break changes the bias.

This article was written by Greg Michalowski at investinglive.com.

The USDCAD is pushing higher in the North American session, after sellers stalled the fall near a key downside target over the last three or so trading days.
