In October, rival server makers Dell and HPE rallied in sympathy, so a similar read-through is possible in the next session. The full-year range is the weak point: it sits only modestly above expectations and could cap enthusiasm once investors work through the second-half arithmetic. The customer mix and margins remain the swing factors for whether the rally holds.

—

Super Micro cleared even the higher bar it set for itself last month, though its full-year forecast quietly assumes the pace slows.

Summary:

Q1 revenue was around $19.9bn, against expectations of about $16bn and above the company’s own preliminary range of $18.5bn to $19.5bn

Adjusted EPS was roughly $1.80, ahead of forecasts near $1.20

Q2 revenue guidance is $19.5bn to $21.5bn, above the roughly $18bn expected

Q2 adjusted EPS guidance is $1.66 to $1.90, against forecasts near $1.14

Full-year revenue guidance is $72bn to $78bn, broadly in line with expectations around $73bn

Shares rose in after-hours trade

Super Micro Computer shares rose in after-hours trade after the AI server maker reported fiscal first-quarter revenue of nearly $20bn. It also guided the current quarter higher still, extending the run of growth it previewed in a surprise update last month.

According to the company’s results, revenue for the September quarter came in at around $19.9bn, against analyst expectations of about $16bn. Adjusted earnings per share were roughly $1.80, well ahead of forecasts near $1.20.

The consensus figures overstate the size of the surprise. On 20 October, Super Micro said it expected first-quarter revenue of $18.5bn to $19.5bn, far above its earlier guidance of $14.5bn to $15.5bn, and its shares jumped 14% in extended trade on the news. Many published estimates do not appear to have caught up with that update. Even so, the final revenue figure landed above the top end of the company’s own preliminary range.

The outlook is the stronger signal. Super Micro expects second-quarter revenue of $19.5bn to $21.5bn, against expectations of about $18bn. It expects adjusted earnings per share of $1.66 to $1.90, compared with forecasts near $1.14. For the full fiscal year, it sees revenue of $72bn to $78bn, broadly in line with expectations of around $73bn.

That full-year range carries an implication worth noting. The first-quarter result and the midpoint of second-quarter guidance add up to roughly $40bn for the first half. The midpoint of the annual forecast would then leave about $35bn for the second half, or close to $17bn a quarter, below the pace of the first two quarters. Management may simply be guiding conservatively, but the arithmetic suggests the company is not assuming the current run-rate continues all year.

Questions raised after the October update remain open. One is how much of the business comes from the largest cloud providers compared with newer AI-focused cloud companies. Another is whether the margin improvement flagged last month has held. Investors will look to the company’s earnings call for answers on both.

This article was written by Eamonn Sheridan at investinglive.com.

The after-hours gain extends a rally that began with last month’s preliminary update, and the strong current-quarter guide gives the AI hardware trade another demand signal.
