What next?

Sellers have been leaning against retracement levels.

Going back to last week, the rally in the AUDUSD stalled near 0.7065, the 50% retracement of the move down from the September 9 high. Staying below, kept the seller in play.

This week – on Monday – the pair set its high for the week as it tested the 100-hour and 100-day moving averages (blue lines on the chart below), both near 0.7030 at the time. The 38.2% retracement of the same move was just below at 0.7025.

The price moved below those levels and reached 0.6954 yesterday before snapping back higher as US stocks rallied and the market shifted back toward risk-on after the US elections. That bounce took the pair back toward 0.7025, where sellers leaned against the broken 38.2% retracement today.

The stock selloff took the AUDUSD to a fresh low.

As US stocks sold off today, so did the AUDUSD. The pair fell below the 200-hour moving average at 0.70159, the 100-hour moving average at 0.7003, and the swing area between 0.6989 and 0.6994. The selling picked up as the stock indices extended their declines. The pair broke yesterday’s 0.6954 low and traded down to 0.6949, its lowest level since October 19.

What now?

The close barometer for buyers and sellers is 0.6970–0.6977. That area represents the 38.2% to 50% retracement of the North American session’s trend move down from 0.7006 (see 5-minute chart) him. If buyers can’t get back above that zone, the path of least resistance remains to the downside, with the next support at 0.6932–0.6936. There are a number of prior swing lows and highs in that area, so watch how the price reacts on a test.

If buyers can get above 0.6977 and stay above it, the sellers lose some of their grip. That would put the broken 0.6989–0.6994 swing area back in play. Buyers would need to reclaim that area to build on a bounce, with the 100-hour moving average at 0.7003 the next hurdle.

Trading education. Match the retracement to the move you’re trading.

There are two different 38.2% retracements in this setup. The one at 0.7025 measures the broader move down from the September 9 high and helps explain where sellers showed up today. The one near 0.6970 measures the much shorter drop from 0.7006 and gives traders a closer level to judge the strength of the next bounce.

How much of the drop can buyers take back? If a bounce stalls near 0.6970, sellers are still keeping the correction shallow. If buyers get above the 50% midpoint near 0.6977 and hold it, they’ve taken back more than half of the session’s drop. That’s a reason for sellers to reassess their close risk. The next test is whether buyers can turn the former floor at 0.6989–0.6994 back into support.

This article was written by Greg Michalowski at investinglive.com.

Sellers have been leaning against retracement levels.
