Japan PM Ishiba says again can’t accept US tariffs on autos

A US-Japan trade deal is not at all imminent.

There are still strong sticking points, such as Ishiba’s reluctance to accept Trump’s tariffs on Japanese autos. A local issue for Japan is Japan’s upper house election due in July.

Ishiba:

  • cannot accept United States tariffs including for cars
  • seeking a win-win deal with the US, investments are key
