Xinhau reports that China’s top diplomat met with the US ambassador and said he hopes the US official will promote healthy, steady, sustainable ties.

I think you have to take the existence of a meeting as a good sign that they will get to a point where Trump and Xi can have a call and reset things again. It’s also notable that there has been no follow up to Trump’s ‘no more Mr. Nice Guy’ tweet from four days ago.
