Pres. Trump is saying:

  • Auto tariffs may go up in the not to distant future.

Earlier Trump said that

  • EV chargers are too expensive but likes Teslas
  • He is all for electric if you buy the right one. EV is great

He added that:

  • Musk does like him; wants to talk to Musk about EVs

He then upped the “like” to “love” saying Musk really loves him.

With the apology yesterday, it seems the bromance is back again and look for some special treatment

After all that, Trump just signed a executive order nixing California EV vehicle rules.

The California EV vehicle rules are some of the most stringent.

What are those rules?

Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Sales Mandate

  • By 2035, 100% of new passenger vehicles sold in California must be zero-emission (battery electric, plug-in hybrid, or hydrogen fuel cell).

  • Intermediate targets:

    • 35% ZEVs by 2026

    • 68% ZEVs by 2030

    • Rule applies to automakers, not individuals (used gas cars can still be sold or owned).

Rules for Trucks and Commercial Fleets (Advanced Clean Fleets Rule)

  • By 2036, all new medium- and heavy-duty trucks sold must also be zero-emission.

  • Specific phase-in timelines apply to:

    • Drayage trucks (port trucks): 100% zero-emission by 2035

    • Last-mile delivery fleets, government fleets, and larger commercial fleets have earlier ZEV requirements starting in 2024–2027.

Charging Infrastructure Requirements

  • New multi-family housing and commercial buildings must include EV charging infrastructure.

  • California offers rebates and grants to install chargers at homes, businesses, and public locations.

Incentives & Rebates

  • Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP): Up to $7,500 off new EV purchases (income limits apply).

  • Additional local incentives may apply (e.g., utility company rebates, HOV lane access).

  • Programs prioritize low- and moderate-income buyers.
