ICYMI: Japan prime minister Ishiba reaffirms protecting national interests in trade talks

From earlier: Japan PM Ishiba says disagreements remain with US on tariff talks

With Trump cutting short his stay at the G7 summit, there wasn’t any real progress in trade talks between Japan and the US. Ishiba noted that he did have a discussion with Trump but there’s still a divergence in viewpoints on some aspects related to trade.

The Japanese prime minister was quoted in saying that “tariffs are dealing a blow to the profits of many Japanese companies, including those in the automotive industry”. That remains the key sticking point it would seem.

For some context, Japan wants the US to drop all tariffs especially that on autos. At the same time, Ishiba has reaffirmed that they won’t be making concessions especially on agriculture for it. That is the current positioning as we are now three weeks away from the 9 July deadline for a deal.
