The AUDUSD has spent the last three trading days moving up and down inside a narrow range, with a low near 0.7005 and a high at 0.70397. That is only about 35 pips from bottom to top. There has been plenty of movement within that range, but limited progress for either the buyers or the sellers.
In the video above, I take a look at the technical levels defining that battle and explain why traders should be preparing for a potential break and run.
The moving averages tell the story of indecision
Inside the range sit two key technical levels: the 100-hour moving average near 0.7023 and the 100-day moving average at 0.70317.
The price has been trading above and below those moving averages. A move above has not generated enough buying momentum to get away. A move below has not led to a sustained push lower either. That back-and-forth price action tells us that neither side has been able to take firm control.
Moving averages can be useful barometers for the trading bias. However, when the price repeatedly crosses them in a narrow range, traders need to recognize what the market is saying: the directional conviction is limited, and the market is waiting for a catalyst.
That catalyst could come from economic data, central bank commentary, or a broader shift in the USD or risk sentiment. The technical chart does not tell us which headline will do it. It does give us levels to judge whether the reaction is changing the picture.
What would give the buyers more control?
For the buyers, getting above the 100-hour moving average near 0.7023 is a start. Moving above the 100-day moving average at 0.70317 would add to the bullish tilt.
However, the buyers also need to get above—and stay above—the range high at 0.70397. That would take the price outside the ceiling that has limited the upside over the last three days.
A sustained break would open the door toward the 200-day moving average at 0.70535, followed by the 50% retracement at 0.70654.
Those become the next hurdles. If the price breaks higher but quickly falls back below the range high and the moving averages, the failed break would raise questions about the buyers’ conviction.
What would give the sellers more control?
On the downside, a move below the moving averages would shift the focus back toward the range low near 0.7005.
A break below that floor would put the 200-hour moving average near 0.69979 into play, followed by the swing area around 0.6990.
The sellers would need to get through those levels to build on the break. If the price falls below the range and then quickly moves back inside it, the downside attempt would also lose credibility.
Anticipate the opportunity. Let the price confirm it.
A narrow range does not guarantee that a big move is coming immediately. The range can remain narrow, and an initial break can fail.
However, the best traders anticipate what might happen next. They recognize the compression, identify the levels that matter, and prepare a game plan for either direction.
For the AUDUSD, the question is whether the next push outside 0.7005–0.70397 can attract enough follow-through to get the market moving.
The opportunity comes from a break that can stay broken. Until then, the buyers and sellers remain locked in the same narrow battle.
