Two of Wall Street’s most-read desks flagged the same underlying worry within weeks of each other, and neither flag was visible to the retail trader watching a standard price chart.
Mizuho’s multi-asset team noted that momentum baskets had completely round-tripped, breaking below the lows set during July’s Situational Awareness hedge fund unwind, and warned the move had turned self-fulfilling as systematic strategies de-risked into the weakness. Around the same time, JPMorgan’s chief technical strategist drew a more historically loaded comparison, telling clients that the current divergence in AI stocks echoed the pattern seen in the months before the dot-com bubble burst in 2000.
The JPMorgan note, published August 21, pointed to a market that looked outwardly fine. The S&P 500 was sitting just below resistance in the 7,909 to 7,935 range and still holding above support near 7,521 to 7,620, technically bullish by any conventional read. But the internals told a different story. In a healthy rally, the strategist noted, the companies buying the chips and the companies selling them tend to rise together. He likened today’s setup to 1999, when communications equipment suppliers surged while the heavy capital spenders behind them cratered from peak valuations. The modern version of that split was stark: the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index was up 87 percent on the year and had just logged its best quarter ever, while the hyperscalers actually funding the AI buildout were lagging badly, with Microsoft posting its worst monthly decline since 2000 (the tech bubble) and Meta down on the year. The conclusion was that the index could still look bullish on the surface while cracking underneath it, and that conditions could deteriorate quickly heading into September.
What connects the Mizuho and JPMorgan notes isn’t the specific call, it’s the type of evidence behind it. Both were built on internals: positioning data, factor basket construction, and proprietary technical levels that live inside institutional research, not on anything a retail trader can pull up on a standard charting platform. That’s worth sitting with, because it points to a structural gap in what different market participants actually get to see.
The tool retail can’t touch
Take the Morgan Stanley Tech Momentum Index, ticker MSZZTMTM, as a concrete example of what that gap looks like in practice. It’s a proprietary Morgan Stanley index, part of the same family as their broader US momentum products, that appears to track a long and short pair trade in tech, media and telecom names ranked by momentum, rebalanced systematically. During July’s momentum unwind, its 17-day rate of change hit negative 35.9 percent, described at the time as the steepest decline in the index’s 27-year history. Days later, during the short squeeze that followed, the same factor reportedly rose more than 12 percent in a single session, the largest one-day gain on record, surpassing anything seen even in the 2000 dot-com unwind.
That’s a genuinely useful, granular signal, and it’s completely invisible to anyone outside a small circle of institutional clients. MSZZTMTM has no public ticker on Yahoo Finance, Google Finance, or any retail charting platform. It isn’t listed on an exchange. The only realistic ways to see it are through a Bloomberg terminal, which runs in the order of $2,000 a month per seat, through direct access to Morgan Stanley’s prime brokerage or Quantitative Investment Strategies desk, or secondhand, glimpsed only when a strategist chooses to quote a data point from it in a note that eventually filters into financial media. For the overwhelming majority of independent and retail traders, that price tag alone puts the index out of reach, and even those who could justify the cost still need the relationship or mandate to access the underlying data feed.
That’s the real shape of the access gap. It isn’t that retail traders are bad at reading markets. It’s that an entire layer of the market, built from data most people will never see, shapes how the largest, most sophisticated participants are positioned, and that layer only becomes visible in fragments, after the fact, when a sell-side note happens to mention it.
The proxies, and where they quietly diverge
Faced with that gap, the natural instinct is to reach for a public stand-in. For tech-flavoured momentum specifically, the most obvious candidates are the iShares MSCI USA Momentum Factor ETF (MTUM) and the Invesco S&P 500 High Beta ETF (SPHB), both freely chartable on TradingView, Yahoo Finance, or any standard platform. For something closer to MSZZTMTM’s tech concentration, the Invesco S&P 500 Momentum ETF (SPMO) and the Invesco Dorsey Wright Technology Momentum ETF (PTF) narrow the gap further.
These are useful, but they are not the same instrument, and the differences matter more than they first appear. MTUM and its peers are long-only funds, they hold the winners and nothing else, while a pair-trade index like MSZZTMTM is built long and short simultaneously, which means it captures the violence of a short squeeze or a forced unwind on both sides at once. A long-only proxy simply cannot replicate that magnitude. Rebalancing cadence adds another layer of drift, since MTUM’s holdings are set on a periodic schedule rather than adjusted daily, so it can still be sitting on names that were momentum leaders months ago even as real-time leadership rotates underneath it.
The gap isn’t theoretical. When Mizuho described momentum baskets breaking below their July lows in a fresh, self-fulfilling unwind, the obvious retail proxy, MTUM, was doing nothing of the sort. Its July low was $302.09, set on July 17, and weeks later it was still trading comfortably above that level, nowhere near confirming the breakdown Mizuho was describing in the actual proprietary baskets. Used carelessly, a proxy like that doesn’t just give an incomplete picture, it can point in a different direction entirely from what the professional data is showing.
Working with what you can actually see
None of this is a reason for retail traders to feel shut out of the conversation, even though the frustration is a fair one to feel. The honest position is that retail is working with a lower-resolution picture of certain internals, and no amount of wishing changes that. What does help is knowing precisely where the resolution drops off, so a proxy gets used for what it’s genuinely good for, a directional read on whether momentum broadly is strengthening or weakening, and not mistaken for a precise stand-in for a number it was never built to replicate.
That’s really the only sustainable posture here. Focus on what’s within your control: your own price action, your volume, your risk management, and a disciplined skepticism toward any single data point, including your own proxies. Treat notes like Mizuho’s and JPMorgan’s as valuable color on a layer of the market you can’t observe directly, rather than as instructions to be replicated. The professional desks will always see something retail doesn’t. The traders who do well over time aren’t the ones who resent that gap, they’re the ones who build a process robust enough not to need it closed.
