The White House is out with a statement from White House press secretary Levitt saying: today,
The BLS released the largest downward revision on record proving that Pres. Trump was right: Biden’s economy was a disaster and the BLS is broken. This is exactly why we need new leadership to restore trust and confidence in the BLS’s data on behalf of the financial markets, businesses, policymakers, and families that rely on this data to make major decisions. Much like the BLS has failed the American people, so has Jerome “Too Late” Powell – who has officially run out of excuses and must cut the rates now.
The final revision will be made in February 2026.

Saudi Arabia is not pleased with the Israeli attack on Doha. Crown Prince
The crown prince affirmed the kingdom would support Qatar saying:
Meanwhile, there are conflicting reports as to what the US knew and did not know. A US journalist Stein is reporting that the US was NOT given notified in advance of the Israeli strike in Doha. That conflicts with the early reports that Pres. Trump was notified and gave the green light.
UPDATE: The US is now saying that the Israeli notification came when the missiles had been launched, and therefore the Trump administration didn’t have a possibility to weigh in. Being involved would potentially disappoint Trump allies like Saudi Arabia.
Israel’s Netanyahu is saying that he ordered the security forces to prepare a strike on Hamas leaders after the Jerusalem and Gaza attacks, and believed the attacks were entirely justified. He ordered the attacks today after identifying a “operational opportunity.”

The BLS preliminary estimate of nonfarm payrolls benchmark revision would:
The consensus was for a decline of -682K. Forecast range from -200K to -900K
The revision is the largest on record.
In 2024 it showed a revision of -548K
The data shows a weaker employment picture than previously reported, and certainly would motivate the Fed to cut. It also highlights the data problem that has started to creep into the economic releases.
US yields remain higher, with the two-year up 2.2 basis points at 3.517%. The 10-year yield is also up 2.2 basis points at 4.068%.

The S&P index record high close came in at 6507.95 on September 8. The current price is at 6500.70

The NZDUSD extended higher yesterday as broad US dollar selling provided support. The upside momentum carried into today’s session, but the rally stalled right at the key 100-day moving average at 0.59596, with the high topping out just shy at 0.59586. Sellers stepped in at that level and pushed the pair lower, bringing it back toward a swing zone near 0.59376—a level defined by prior highs from August 15 and 18.
At this point, the market is caught in a tight battle between resistance at the 100-day moving average and support at 0.59376. A sustained break below 0.59376 would open the door for a move toward the 200-bar moving average on the 4-hour chart at 0.59088. Conversely, if buyers can hold the current support, it sets the stage for another retest of the 100-day moving average. A clean break above that level would tilt the bias more firmly in favor of the bulls.
In the video above, I outline the technical levels and explain the key levels in play.

Qatar
Israel says that the US has been notified before the mass leaders were attacked in Doha. Israel television is reporting that US Pres. Trump gave Israel the green light for the attack.
Trading up $0.92 or 1.49% at $63.20. The high price did extend to $63.52. The 100 hour moving average has been broken in the process. That moving average currently comes in at $63.10. The 38.2% retracement of the move down from the September high comes in at $63.20.

There have been reported blasts in Qatar’s Doha region. Axios is now reporting that a senior Israeli official says the explosion is an assassination operation against a senior Hamas official.
Israel ordered a mass evacuation of Gaza City, signaling it is moving forward with a full-scale invasion of the largest urban center in northern Gaza. The directive forces hundreds of thousands of civilians to choose between staying under bombardment or fleeing south to already overcrowded and devastated areas.
The move follows weeks of intensified Israeli preparations, including calling up 60,000 reservists, with officials framing Gaza City as one of Hamas’s last strongholds.
Prime Minister Netanyahu has pushed for the offensive despite opposition from some security officials and criticism from international allies and aid groups. The order also comes as cease-fire negotiations between Hamas and Israel remain at a standstill.

The Fed remains in the blackout period and the US earnings calendar is light so it’s a bit of a deadzone right now. The economic calendar is also no help with virtually noting coming up in US or Canadian trading. The lone exception is a 3-year Treasury auction at 1 pm ET. I struggle to see how that could be a market mover so it will be all about the ebb and flow or whatever trickles out of the White House today.

It would have been a very boring session if it wasn’t for a Bloomberg report saying that a BoJ rate hike was still on the cards for this year. The JPY got a boost from the headline and then extended the gains likely due to speculations of a cut coming already in October.
In the bigger picture, that wasn’t new information as the market was already pricing basically a 50% chance for a hike by year-end, and that hasn’t changed much after the Bloomberg report, even though the probabilities increased a bit.
Other than that, we haven’t got any meaningful news or data release. Speaking of the data, there was just the US NFIB Business Optimism Index which improved slightly from the prior month. As for other business surveys, the economic conditions look positive and uncertainty continues to dimish, but the labour market remains frozen with low hiring and low firing.
That might change with the September Fed rate cut and expectations of more cuts coming in the next months…

The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index rose 0.5 points
in August to 100.8, nearly 3 points above the 52-year average of 98. Of
the 10 Optimism Index components, four increased, four decreased, and
two were unchanged. The increase in those expecting real sales to be
higher contributed the most to the rise in the Optimism Index. The
Uncertainty Index fell by 4 points to 93 but remained well above the
historical average. The decline was due to a decrease in uncertainty
about financing expectations and planned capital expenditures.
NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg said: “Optimism increased slightly in August with more owners reporting
stronger sales expectations and improved earnings. While owners have
cited an improvement in overall business health, labor quality remained
the top issue on Main Street.”
This and other business surveys have been positive. The slowdown fears have been coming just from the labour market which remains frozen with low layoffs and low hiring.
